Using It Up prints "Spoken 0 lines" on the entries where nobody said anything

You can open an entry on this site, read the whole page, and find that nobody ever said a word in it. The one about a shirt mended in twelve minutes is like that: a headline, a photograph of hands sewing, a caption, and where the spoken words would sit there is a row reading Spoken, 0 lines.

Using It Up is a small publication about finishing what you already own. Things used to the last of them, mended, kept, and not bought. It is for anyone whose feed is full of restocking videos and who would like one thing in it going the other way. What you get is short entries about a single object each, filed under five columns with names like Finished it, Still works and Didn't buy it, and a letter that goes out on Sunday carrying one entry a week. It costs nothing. No fee, no shop, no affiliate link on any page of it.

Some entries have no sentences in them

Every entry went out first as a short film of one object. For a stretch at the beginning there was no voice over the footage, so those entries are a headline and a caption and nothing more. There is no recording of anybody reading them, because nobody read them.

Each of those entries does carry a caption. Nothing prevents the page from setting the caption as the body text, which would give every entry a paragraph and make every page look identical. The shirt entry would then open with "twelve minutes and it's a shirt again", presented as something said out loud. It was typed under a video.

That is the one substitution this publication cannot make. Nothing on the site is written for the site. The headlines, the spoken lines and the captions are the posts themselves, read back as text, and a page that quietly promotes a caption into a line of narration is publishing a sentence that was never spoken on a site whose whole argument is that the words are the words.

So the page states the absence instead

The ingest step that builds the site's single data file marks an entry narrated when it has spoken lines and silent when it has none. It counts, it does not guess. The entry page then prints that count in plain words in the fact grid, and the body section headed The lines does not render at all. The grid above it follows the same rule: a row with nothing true to put in it was taken out rather than filled with something adjacent.

Both of those are live pages you can read right now. The silent ones stay in the inventory, published, dated, sitting between narrated entries, carrying their object photograph and a row that says out loud how much of them was spoken.
