R1/BETA6, STILL BETA SINCE 2001

Haiku R1/beta6 has been released

Haiku released R1/beta6. Still beta, still R1, the project has been rebuilding BeOS as an open-source desktop OS, source and binary compatible with R5, since 2001, and hasn't declared a stable release yet.

The easy joke is the version number. The part I find harder to believe is the driver stack: a volunteer group keeping its own kernel, its own API and its own userland booting on hardware that changes every year, with zero vendor support anywhere in the chain.

Most of the interesting operating systems work happens inside Linux now. A beta of a from-scratch desktop OS that isn't Linux and isn't a research toy is a rarer thing than the release notes make it look.
